Planetary Annihilation Homage

All models were created in the last week as an homage to the upcoming game Planetary Annihilation, with most being directly inspired by units from my favorite childhood RTS game, Total Annihilation.

Made using 3DS-Max and Photoshop. Total time spent roughly 40 hours, with each model taking 3-15 hours, and ranging from 300-1,200 polygons.

  1. When Planetary Annihilation is released, find a good modder and ask him if he could somehow put ur units into the game...

    Note: THIS IS GENIAL!!!

  2. I had intended to try and get in on a decent modding team when TA is released. We'll just have to see where I am in my career at that point.

    4. Yes, I thought that when you made it, same idea came up on your mind. And also, are these models animated or do you plan it? And, do you plan to make additional ones if you make the modder team? And last question, do you know how a dog moves?

P.S.: Why is the tank's name Petka?

P.P.S.: Hope you'll make the modder team. I'll try to tell about you to everyone and everywhere and try to make this famous.

P.P.P.S.: Can you also recolor your models to the red that was seen in the trailer? For me?

  3. From the original Total Annihilation, there was a unit called the Jeffy. It was named after one of the designers Jeff Petaku. This is the upgraded version, and Petka sounds cooler and does not blatantly use the guys last name.

  4. The red ones are beautiful...!

And about the name, I asked, because I am czech and Petka is the czech diminutive of Peter (peťka) and five (pětka).

And, what was the inspiration for the other models?

    1. Most of the other units were direct upgrades of other units in the original Total Annihilation. I picked some of the ones I really liked playing from the game. The commander unit was my attempt at a custom Planetary Annihilation Commander. The Cannon was something I thought would be a neat addition to the game, as well as displaying that I could still emulate the art style while generating original content

    3. Yay, nice.
Could I have a few suggestions for, as you said, neat additions to the game?
First: Bertha - drops mines, high health, low armor, slow movement, absolutely no way to defend itself.
Second: MMV (Magnetic Mortar Vehicle) - fires magnetic mines that attract and attach to their target and blow up after a few sec, high health, low armor, slow attack and movement. In addition to it, every unit should have an upgrade for anti-magnetic field. And there should be something like kamikaze: when your unit has low health and a mmine on it, it runs into enemies.
Third: MMT (Magnetic Mortar Tower) - same as MMV, but a building.
Gonna scan my ilustrations and give you the imgur link. Note: pretty bad illustrations, but that is better for you, because you can put more of your imagination into it.
      Edit: removed vulgarisms.

    Note: Everything white is teamcolor.

Note 2: I do not care about MMT's look.

Note 3: Not fullsize, scanned from A5

  7. Seen this? http://planetaryannihilation.tumblr.com/post/41301381883/pa-srt-2013-1 I think some edits to your models would make a great fit to the game if you'll add'em and this concept'll stay.

  8. Yeah, I've seen them. I was a backer for the Kickstarter and got access to the early backer's lounge on their forums. It was pretty cool stuff! After they released their first concept trailer, I contacted Uber and used these as a pitch to see if they would let me model a unit as part of my donation, but sadly they are not set up to receive outside content. I'll just wait till it comes out and see about getting together or joining a modding team, unless i get a real job by then :P

  9. Yeah, yeah, I am a backer too. That was the way I found you - searching for PA pictures :D. And another question: Have you read my suggestions yet? And if, what do you say about'em?

  10. And if you did not seen something on the picture, I added contrast and textboxes: http://imgur.com/FNyj2m7

    1. I like the idea of mortar deployed mines, and I think it could lead to some interesting scenarios. I liked generating mine fields in Total Annihilation as a form of area denial and defense, but your concept is neat in that opens mining up to be used in a more offensive manner. I like the idea but I think it might lean a bit too much towards micro-management to fit effectively with Ubers core concept of generalized strategy. It would certainly make an interesting addition to a mod package, and works well as an initial concept, but would also benefit for a touch more detail. I would say give it a few more iterations and see what works in your sketches.

    2. a question - what did you mean by generalized strategy? Like, you know WarCraft's strategies or somethin' totally different?

    3. Maybe that wasn't the best term for it but the developers have put an emphasis on macro-management, where you concentrate more on overall strategy (such as unit placement, squad composition, flanking maneuvers, etc.) as opposed to fast paced micro-management like Stacraft and Warcraft which emphasizes a heavy reliance on execution of unit specific ability's and knowledge of hot keys.

Their approach with PA is more of a hands off armchair approach to battle where you give orders and sit back, rather than having to be in the thick of every battle. It lends itself better to fighting on multiple fronts/planets. Hope that's a better answer for you.

    4. Yop, thanks, now I get it. I think that this should fit my style better - never been good at WarCraft or StarCraft :D. I think it is more like the one old game I loved and lately started replaying it - Army Men RTS... I love its style, poetry and humour...

  11. Since I saw this, I wanted to ask you a question, but I always forgot to...so, How much have you backed? I backed 90 to play the game as soon as possible - Alpha + Beta + Release...
